a transport group in Manila, Philippines announced the upcoming transport strike on December 14-15. The strike is being organized to protest against the government's public utility vehicle (PUV) modernization program. One of the major concerns of the transport group is the impending phaseout of traditional jeepneys, which is set to take place on December 31.
The group believes that this move will not only affect the livelihood of thousands of jeepney drivers but also lead to a rise in transportation costs for the public. The protest is expected to cause significant disruption to public transportation in Manila and its neighboring areas.
During a press conference held by the Pinagkaisang Samahan ng mga Tsuper at Operator Nationwide (Piston), the group announced that the transport strike may be prolonged depending on how the government officials respond to their call.
According to Piston president Mody Florenda, a nationwide transport strike is scheduled to take place on December 14 and 15. The strike will be led by Piston, local transport groups, and various progressive organizations that stand in solidarity with drivers and operators.
According to Florenda, while they do not necessarily oppose the modernization of jeepneys, they are advocating for a more systematic and comprehensive approach that would take into account the welfare of the drivers and operators of these iconic vehicles. Perhaps, they believe that the current modernization plan may not be adequately addressing the concerns and needs of the stakeholders involved. Therefore, they are fighting for a more inclusive and sustainable modernization plan that would benefit everyone involved in the jeepney industry.
